Notes
While Stanley is billed as the "star" of the show, the main character is definitely George/Olly. But we still want the captain to be a complex, nuanced character.
At the age of 5, Finn's father, Michael was assassinated during a speech on the importance of the vote for puppet independence. It is widely accepted that this event swung the popular opinion from what was a 45/65 split against to a 80/20 split in favor.
Finn's mother, Shari, a social worker, didn't remarry until 9 years later.
At 18, Finn was granted an appointment to the North American Air Force Academy, where he excelled as a pilot, and upon graduating, he joined the NAASA Astronaut Corps.
Finn was more than happy working for NAASA on the Space Program. He'd been to Mars, he'd been to the moon, he was happy being a Shuttle Commander. After a few years with NAASA he was assigned to the crews of the Mars Shuttles. His "duties" prevented him from being the center point of the ceremonies for the 20th anniversary of his father's death, and as such, calmed the spectacle.
He transferred from the Mars run to Lunar Run as a shuttle Commander and eventually to Lunar Base as senior Commander for flight operations and Search and Rescue pilot for "stray miners." It was here that he first came into contact with Elaine Barrett.
In 2074, when the GSC Charter sparked riots in New York, two Mars Shuttles were sabotaged and left adrift. Finn immediately volunteered to lead the rescue mission, as he knew the route, the crafts and the people. Using a modified rescue tug loaded down with tools and supplies from Lunar Base, it took nearly two months to reach both shuttles, salvage parts, transfer personnel and complete repairs, and return to Earth. Everyone aboard was saved, and Finn had finally made a name for himself that was not overshadowed by being his father's son.
The mission also kept him away from Lunar Base during the Terrorist Attacks and subsequent rescue mission.
Once the GSA was chartered, Finn was put "On Loan" to be a flight instructor for the first class of cadets. At this time, he taught the young Pepe Day.
During the 30th anniversary of the vote for Puppet Independence, Finn was "away" on retreat when a slingshot mishap caused a Mars shuttle to go careening towards the sun.
After the first class graduated from the GSA, Finn, Dean Nichols and Gillian Frye entered the GSC Command Program. It took a severe tongue lashing from Finn's mother to convince him that this was the right thing to do.
Finn believes in puppet independence. His father, Michael Finn was a puppets' rights activist who was assassinated at a pro-independence rally before the foundation of the Independent Puppet Nations. The UPN government believes that Finn holds the same radical "we must be independent at all costs" beliefs that his father held. In truth, Finn believes in peaceful co-existence, but he accepted this mission (and the Secret Mission) to honor his father's memory. It's quite possible, though, that he believes they won't actually meet with success.
While Finn may not be confident in the outcome of the mission, he is a soldier, and will take orders and execute them to the best of his ability, so his doubts will rarely be made public, although they may be expressed in private to those he trusts. He does take the mission seriously, though, especially the exploration portion, because while he's not commanding the flagship (yet), he is commanding the only one of the IPVs with this specific mission.
Side note: Finn's father's assassin was never captured. It is widely believed that he was killed by a landholder whose property was slated to be turned into an Independent Puppet Nation once the treaties were signed, but in fact, he was killed by a puppet assassin hired by those orchestrating the puppet side of the treaty in order to give their position the momentum it needed for approval by the majority of puppet citizens.
