Notes

Commander Barrett is sometimes referred to as "The Great Unknown" on the Intrepid. She tends to be very solitary when not on duty, and is very reserved when she is. Many feel this is because her personality is much like the insects and plants she likes to study. But no one says that to her face.

Elaine used to be very boisterous and outgoing, and colleagues who knew her ten years ago would swear to that, although there aren't many of those left.

Barrett was working late in the agriculture dome the night of the terrorist attacks on the lunar base. Explosive charges were set in the dome and the adjoining scientist housing, but the detonator in the dome malfunctioned and that charge never went off. Elaine was trapped inside the dome while she watched huge sections of the lunar base explode and float away. Every one of her co-workers, including her (secret) fiancee Dr. Leonard Dorn were lost in the attack, and Barrett was stranded inside the agriculture dome for nearly six days before a rescue occurred.

Barrett has always worked closely with humans, and was only the second puppet (and first female puppet) to win a Nobel Prize (which she attributes to research pioneered by the human scientist Dr. Dorn).

She eventually joined, and then commanded the Mars Tera-forming mission, before she was asked to join the GSC to serve as the Bunraku's Science Officer. Once the political shift started happening, and the Intrepid's mission changed, she was re-trained for command, and reassigned to the Intrepid.

While she understands the need to find other habitable worlds - especially so that puppets have a position of strength from which to negotiate peace, she feels that a secret and unexpected exodus of puppets from Earth is over-reactive.

One of her secondary projects is documenting what would be necessary for successful colonization of a habitable planet.

She has a son that she put up for adoption when she was 17.
