Olly is bright, and eager, but a little unsure of himself. He was supposed to do the start of his masters in Astrogation in Berkeley while the Valor was being completed, and then get assigned there as the NovCon officer, but the disaster on the Intrepid during her shakedown cruise changed GSC's plans for him. The unexpected promotion to the Intrepid's Bridge Crew has done much to bolster his confidence, but there is still an underlying lack of confidence that colors his decisions. Olly met Sarah at Galaxy Scout Academy when she was delivering a lecture on EORS protocols for GSC personnel. They hit it off almost immediately (much to Olly's surprise), and they've been together for just over a year as of the start of the series. Olly's older brother, Francis, left home when Olly was a pre-teen, so his relationship with Nate has alot of the "older/younger brother" dynamic to it. Olly and his family were in NYC for the UN Riots which occurred immediately following the Chartering of the GSC. The family witnessed the riots first hand. There were there because Olly's father needed to be in NYC for a business meeting, so he brought the family along and made it a vacation so they could witness the chartering of the GSC. Olly and his brother were separated from their parents during the mayhem, and Francis was forced to "protect" his younger brother, the results of which led him to leave the family shortly thereafter to travel to Lhasa to study after a period of time in which Olly noticed he was particularly unhappy. One of the things that really needs to be explored in the first three "years" is Olly's dislike of violence, that DOESN'T keep him from morphing into the "BLOW THEM OUT OF THE SKY!" Lieutenant seen in the very first scene of the show. Granted, this is probably seriously elevated due to the intensity of the situation, but this is the main focus of the character arc. Self confidence, courage, command. He's our main character, so he has to grow the most. |
