Penelope is a serious pilot. Whether it's a kite, or a starship, she handles it like she was born to it. At times, she can be a little obsessed, and at other times, she can be a bit of a thrill seeker (usually when she has the opportunity to scare the crap out of someone else).
Penelope never wanted to be a research astronaut. She was much more of the "Kessel run in under 5 parsecs" train of thought. Breaking speed records, flying new vehicles and rescuing folks who had been given up for lost was her daily bread. She became somewhat of a legend in the testing circles as the pilot who could tear the wings off a flying saucer. Anyone needing to test the limits of a new flight or space vehicle usually enlisted the services of Penelope Day (better known as Pepe D).
As a 12th birthday gift, Pepe's mother got her flying lessons at one of the smaller municipal airports outside of Chicago. Within six months she had logged twice as much flight time as she needed to actually get a pilot's license, but her age held her back. Four years later, she had talked her way into the seat of an experimental scramjet fighter at an airshow, and completely destroyed the standing airspeed record.
Pepe entered the GSAcademy at 17 as part of their first class of cadets. She turned down her appointment to the NASAU Airforce Academy in favor of the GSAcademy because "Rockets go faster than planes." Tagged as an potential starship pilot while still a cadet, she piloted several difficult lunar and Mars missions, including the mission to rescue four human astronauts returning from Mars who had (due to a switching error) overburned their acceleration rocket and were careening towards the sun, completely out of control. She pioneered what has become known as "Slinging a Pepe" -- Using the gravitational force of a planetary/lunar object to slingshot out of the plane of the solar system arcing back down to the destination, rather than remaining in the elliptic plane and chasing the target until interception.
Pepe graduated from the GSAcademy at 20, immediately becoming a flight instructor.
Penny was enlisted to work on the Bunraku project because they needed someone to rip the wings off the simulator-- a task she took to heart, horrifying the simulator control team and the project engineers on a weekly basis. Eventually the engineers came up with a structural design that she couldn't COMPLETELY destroy without "doing something more than stupid." And so, when the Bunraku was completed, Pepe was chosen to take the completed vessel out on early test flights. During this time, she developed a strong friendship with the Bunraku's Captain Nichols (who was also one of her first flight instructors), who eventually convinced her to take the assignment on the Intrepid despite her desire to teach and break airspeed records. The one concession that Captain Finn had to make to get her on board was access to one of the ships shuttle craft in order to "test and improve upon the design."
